Teahupoo : Florès, Bourez et Drollet en 1/8, Smith à la trappe

Jéméry Florez et Michel Bourez se sont qualifiés facilement pour les huitièmes de finale à Teahupoo, alors que le Tahitien Manoa Drollet a réalisé l'exploit en sortant le n°1 mondial Jordy Smith.

Un Français et deux Tahitiens sont encore en course au Billabong Pro Teahuppo, cinquième étape du championnat du monde, à Tahiti. Dans des vagues de 1m, Jérémy Florès a écrasé l'Australien Luke Stedman (16,87 à 5,07) en 1/16 de finale, alors que Michel Bourez s'est défait d'un autre Australien, Ben Dunn (9,17 à 4,50). En revanche, Joan Duru a dû s'incliner face au Brésilien Adriano de Souza, n°5 mondial (13, 10 à 11), tout comme le Tahitien Heiarii Williams, tombé avec les honneurs face au roi Kelly Slater (15, 73 à 15,64).

La plus belle performance de la journée est à mettre à l'actif du Tahitien Manoa Drollet, 29 ans, qui n'a laissé aucune chance au n°1 mondial, Jordy Smith, battu 15,10 à 12,36. Mick Fanning, le champion du monde, n'a pas encore pu disputer son 1/16 de finale face au Tahitien Tamaroa McComb.
